Dr. Carol Hitchon received her BSc (Hons) in Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology from the University of Calgary in 1988, prior to completing a medical degree (Honours in research) from the University of Alberta in 1992. She completed residency training in Internal Medicine and post graduate fellowship training in Rheumatology at the University of Manitoba. Following this she completed an MSc in Community Health Sciences from the University of Manitoba.

Dr. Carol Hitchon has received Summer Studentships from the Alberta Heritage Foundation of Medical Research, the University of Manitoba Alan Ronald book prize for resident research in 1997 and 1999, a clinical scholarship from the Arthritis Society, a post graduate scholarship from the University of Manitoba and the Health Sciences Centre Foundation Research Fellowship Award. She received the Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Rheumatology Association in 2007.

Currently, Dr. Hitchon is a staff member and clinician scientist in the Section of Rheumatology, Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg Manitoba. Her practice includes general rheumatology with special interests in inflammatory arthritis and lupus. Her research is focused on understanding the pathogenesis and prognostic indicators in rheumatic diseases, in particular early inflammatory arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus, and has been funded by both local and national granting agencies.
